Deep in bowels of Devshop HQ, work continues through the weekend on our upcoming sequel to the Devshop project management application.
I’ve written before that I’m not a big fan of planned overtime. I’ve also written before about how important it is to go that extra mile with respect to user experience, quality and polish.
So I get some satisfaction when I see myself genuinely enthusiastic enough to be working through the holidays and through some weekends, on things that just don’t even feel like work. I get all warm and fuzzy inside when I think of some of the extra details that are going into this new version and I can’t wait to show it to the world. I know they will make the product shine and I get some satisfaction from that. If the Devshop mantra was simply “get it done” and we acted out of that ol’ human desire to compromise (i.e. trade-off), the product would be a lot less inspiring – and who wants to give up their free time to work on something uninspiring? So it seems like the best of all worlds. Customers benefit from a product that will just simply be more of a pleasure to use, the company gets a stronger product to bring to market, and myself and others working on it get to do some really cool things that to tell you the truth, I honestly can’t imagine ANY of my previous bosses in other companies I’ve worked for ever authorizing.
Seems everybody wins. One more reason to make sure your design inspires people. Don’t settle for “good enough.”
